Hico Rocket Day
George and Debra Bales opened up their Field of Dreams to Hico schools again for Hico Rocket Day. The Hico Science Club 5th graders each launched their own hand built rockets and competed for 4 awards. Julia O’Neal was the big winner of the day. She won both the highest launch award and the perfect launch award. The perfect launch is the rocket the stays in the air the longest time. Julia’s rocket soared for 48 seconds! Julia also won a Bose Bluetooth speaker for the year-long competition that celebrates attendance and academics. Colten won the most accurate landing award and Max Gentner won the prestigious mass destruction award.
Science Club Alumni Return to the Launch Site.
Eight graduating seniors returned to the launch site to compete in the Great Rocket Build off. Seven years after joining the Hico Science Club, they returned to turn trash into a rocket. They had one hour to complete the task.

Programming Robots
Author: Falyn McAnally – Vice President
Hello again! At our last science club meeting we got to do some robot programming. All club members split into groups and were assigned a letter for our robots to draw. There were five teams for the four letters, H-I-C-O, and an exclamation point. During the programming we learned how to make our robot do a 90 degree turn. It took several test runs before we got the letters drawn correctly. After they were done, our principal, Mr. Eubanks, awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to the teams that drew the best letters. Madison Dobe and Max Gentner drew the exclamation point and received 1st. The robots were called scribblers. On top of the robot, there is a hole for a marker and once programmed, it can draw just about anything you want it to. We would like to say "Thank You" to Mr. Gentner, Mrs. Beebe, and the other volunteers for showing us how cool programming robots can be.

Tarleton State University and Physics!
By: Cheyanne Still
This science club meeting Tarleton State University came and brought many different experiments. We got to experiment with things like a lightning meter, a hover board, and many other things. We all loved it! I can say it was one of the most fun meetings we have had.

Battling Robots!
Science Club Programs Robots by Jonathan Sandia
Today our science club programmed robots. We could program our robot to show many different features. For instance: lighting, music, and more. Mr. Gentner was a pro at programming robots. We made our robots do many challenges and activities. It was super fun programming robots.
The Hico Science Club is mentored by Reegan Brister, Grace Booth, Jean Poythress, Jasmine Wiley, Brittney Beebe and Jeff Gentner. Cheyanne Still is the Director of Communication.

Multi-meters, volts and amps
Author: Falyn McAnally – Vice President
This week at our science club meeting, we were given multi-meters donated to us from Cole’s Hardware. We got a lesson from Mr. Gentner on how to use them and then the fun began. We tested them out on 9-volt batteries and AAA batteries. We also tested the AC and DC electricity voltage on other electronics in the classroom and on different types of metals included Mrs. Beebe’s wedding ring! After testing 9-volt batteries, Mr. Gentner thought it would be funny to have us stick our tongues to our batteries and give us a little shock! We all had a lot of fun coming up with new things to test out with our multi-meters and were really excited to be able to take them home with us. We would like to say a big thank you to Cole’s Hardware, Mr. Gentner, Mrs. Beebe and all the other volunteers and sponsors that make our science club awesome.

Aquariums and Tadpoles
By: Jonathan Sandia
Hello, everyone! At out last science club meeting, we discussed plants with a garden expert, Mrs. Poythress. We went outside and discussed some plants. After that, she gave each science club member a container to build an aquarium. We made a home for a tadpole in our container that she gave us. We collected twigs, rocks, moss, plants, and water, so that our tadpole can have a nice home. It was a fun learning experience for all of us. We enjoyed having Mrs. Poythress who in an excellent and knowledgeable gardener.

Weird Science!
By: Falyn McAnally
Hello, my name is Falyn McAnally, Vice President of the Hico Science Club. During our meeting last Thursday, we finally got to get into some weird science! We started off by learning how to make lava lamps by mixing vegetable oil, water, and food coloring. Then, we added Alka Seltzer to make them bubble. We even put our lamps on top of flash lights to get an even cooler effect. After that, we combined sugar, baking soda, and lighter fluid to make fire snakes. How awesome is that... Fire in the classroom!! We ended with our secret handshake and got to take our lava lamps home to show our families. We would like to say a special thanks to Mr. Gentner, Mrs. Beebe, Mr. Brandon Bowers, Mrs. Jean Poythress, Ms. Jordan Voges, Grace Booth, and Reegan Brister for helping make our first weird science experiments a totally amazing experience.

Reegan Brister Talks to Science Club
As the 2016-2017 Director of Communications for the Hico Science Club, Reegan Brister returned to his old stomping grounds at the elementary school to promote the science club to the 5th graders. Reegan spoke of launching rockets and battling robots. He grinned when he talked about riding a hover board with the Tarleton Physics Team. He also showed 44 5th graders the science club video that he made last year. Reegan continues to excel in all STEM academics. Over the summer, he attended the Tarleton State Engineering Camp. He spent the week building popsicle stick bridges, dropping egg containers from the Science Building and programming Mindstorm robots. This year, he will be building 3D printed rockets on the Hico Rocket Team.
The Hico Science Club is available to all Hico 5th graders. The science club will continue to build rockets, make slime, program robots and divide by zero just to see what will happen. Parents are invited to volunteer for the club. The next meeting will be September 21st after school. The club will be voting on t-shirt colors and electing officers. The club is mentored by Brittany Beebe and Jeff Gentner.
