Trash To Rockets!
As of our previous science club meeting, we learned about rockets! We also learned about how a rocket works and good tips on how to build a rocket. For this month’s science club meeting, we built rockets out of trash!
We first went into Mrs. Weatherly’s room and it was a normal science club meeting, until we know we were building rockets. On the board was some ideas to add to our rockets such as adding paperclips to the top of the rocket for weight. Also on the board was our words to yell if Mr. Gentner or Mrs. Weatherly said while they were speaking. After explaning what we were doing in the meeting, we were already in groups. Each group send one person to grab our basic materials for our tockt, bute these were not your average rocket materials. We had to build it out of trash. For our base, we could choose paper towel rolls, Pringles can and many other options. After that, each team got to work. We only had around 30 minutes, so everyone was in a rush. Many teams just had one person running back and forth for glueing and cutting. Most people had their rockets done in the first 15-25 minutes, so the teams just decorated their rockets for the rest of the time. Our Director of Communcations, Tate, had to take photos while helping out on his team. After the 30 minutes were up, it was time for launching. So we all went out to a field near our school. Meanwhile there was a track meet in the background. Outside, we launched the rockets while some kids took photos and videos for memories. After all the rockets were luanched, we went home. Some people split up their rockets and shared it. Some people took the rockets whole.
In conclusion, our month’s science club meeting, we launched rockets, built rockets and all made wonderful ideas within their teams. In total, our science club meeting was very rememberable for all and was very enjoyable for all who attended. I believe most of us are looking forward to our next science club meeting!

Multimeter Day
This month in Science Club we did a lot of experiments with electricity. Shout out to Cole's General Store for donating the multimeters. Our secret words for this meeting were "desk" and "ohlms". For those that don't know, if our teachers say the secret words, we would yell out "electricity," and we would win an LED flashlight. Those are a big deal in 5th grade! We also had a bonus phrase that our secretary, Shyli Roberts, would say..."group picture". When she said it, we got together for a photo to take to give to Cole's to hang in the store as a thank you for their generous donation. Also, when Fenix McAnally would walk into the room, we have to say, "Hey, look! It is Fenix from the Rocket Team!" If you screamed those words you would also get a shiny, new LED flashlight.
Moving along, Mr. Gentner went over the safety protocols we had to follow. For example, we are NOT allowed to use the multimeters on cars or outlets. We learned how to use the multimeters. After a really long time, and impatiently waiting, Mr. Gentner said one of the words. We used the multimeters on a battery which had 9 volts. We learned about the numbers and symbols on the multimeters. We used the battery on a light bulb, and checked the volts on the battery and it had around 8 volts. We used the battery on a buzzer and a fan. Then the battery had around 7 volts. It was then that Fenix walked in and we yelled, "Hey, look! It's Fenix from the Rocket Team!" After we saw Fenix, we got back to work, but this time we used two batteries on the lightbulb, buzzer and a fan. Now the battery had around 6 volts. We were told to walk around with our multimeters and we checked what things had voltage. We figured out that our fingers have voltage. Shyli finally screamed "GROUP PICTURE!" We went to the gym and took the group picture. This month for Science Club was wonderful! Our next Science Club meeting is February 22nd....I wonder what neat things we will be doing then!

LED NEON!
Science Club

Do you like Science or energy? What about arts and crafts? If you said yes to any of these questions, then you might like our 4th Science Club Meeting.
The first thing we did was put all our belongings outside by the lockers. After we all sat our stuff down, we all went into Mrs. Weatherley's room and sat down. Once we all sat down, Mr. Gentner started explaining what we were gonna do. Mr. Gentner told us our secrete words to yell whenever he or Mrs. Weatherley says them. He then explained what our project was this month. For our 4th Science Club Meeting, he said that we were gonna make a LED light shape. After all of the explaining, Mr. Gentner calls up each table at a time to get a colored block of wood for the base of our LED light experiment. After we all got our wood blocks, Mrs. Gentner handed out a piece of string so we could plan on what our shape would be. After the first few decided on their shape, we were able to get a sharpie and outline the string for our shape. Then, we went to Mrs. Gentner or Mrs. Weatherley to have our LED strip hot glued onto the wood block. After we all had our LED light project, we took some photos and some of us signed each other's projects. After everything, we got our stuff and left.
In conclusion, our 4th Science Club Meeting was great. I hope you enjoyed knowing what we did at our 4th Science Club Meeting. Thank you to everyone who helped on getting supplies for the meeting, and who helped us with our LED projects.

Egg Catchers
Hico Elementary School Science Club
By Aubree Riechards
At our November Science Club meeting we built an egg catch. Our teachers gave each team some supplies, and we had to make something to catch the egg. When we made the contraption, we had to make sure that nothing fell out or off. There were nine teams, and three people on each team. Every team had the same supplies, and we had 40 minutes to make the catcher. We also got to draw on the egg with markers. After everyone finished, we went outside and dropped the egg from three feet. All of the teams won that round. Next, we dropped the egg from five feet. Two team's eggs broke in that round. Then we dropped the eggs down from the top of the bleachers. Now, there were only seven teams left, and surprisingly four team's eggs won! The teams that won were, teams 6, 8, 3 and 4. I can't wait to see what we have to explore at our next meeting Wednesday, December 13th!

Solar Bugs!
Science Club
By Sam Little
Do you like learning about Science? Well, here at Science Club we learn about Science while having fun. So, I am gonna tell you about what we do at Science Club Meetings.
The first thing we do at Science Club is sit down, but once we sit down a woman we haven't seen goes around and gives us scissors. After the woman gives all of us scissors, Mr. Gentner explains what we will do and who the woman is. The woman was really Mrs. Gentner, Mr. Gentner's wife.
After Mr. Gentner explains everything and what we will be doing for the Science Club Meeting, he tells us what we need and Mrs. Gentner is passing out all of the supplies we need. While Mr. Gentner is going step by step on how to build a vibrating frog, Tate, our Director of Communications is taking photos.
When Mr. Gentner says a keyword that was on the board, not even one second later all you hear is "ECLIPSE!" "ECLIPSE!" "ECLIPSE!". After it calmed down, the person who yelled "eclipse" the loudest, Kase Hutchison, won a flashlight.
So after that, we all went to work. Once we thought we were done, we had to test our solar panel vibrator frogs. Mrs. Gentner turns on a lamp, and we all get in line. After we test them and they work it is time to go. We line up by the door and start going outside where our parents were.
That is what we do at Science Club Meetings. I hope you enjoyed knowing what we do at Science Club.

We Elected Officers!
First Meeting of Hico Elementary Science Club
By Aubree Riechard, President
The first day of Hico Elementary Science Club was awesome! Science Club members had to vote for a president, a vice president, a secretary, and a director of communications. We had 4 words: eclipse, shirt, picture, and rocket. When one of the teachers would say one of those 4 words, we would have to yell "SCIENCE!" very loudly. The first person to yell got a prize. The prizes were flashlights. Then it was time to vote. We voted for a name, a catch phrase, a shirt color, a shirt design, and the four new officers. Director of Communications is Tate Watson. He takes pictures of everyone. Next is Secretary, Shyli Roberts. She turns on the rocket lamps when we have a meeting. She also helps do attendance and keeps up with points. At the end of the year whoever has the most points gets a prize. The Sam Little as Vice President will write an essay with Aubree Riechard who is the President following each meeting. Hico Elementary Science Club will have their next meeting on October 17, 2023.
