2019 Hico Rocket Launch
By Julia O’Neal
At Hico’s 2019 Rocket Launch, there were hours of fun going on. From rockets and robots to free pizza and sodas, everything was so much fun! The launch was located in the Bales’ backyard behind the elementary school, also known as The Field of Dreams. After the launch, the fifth graders received their awards. Cason Tipper took home the award for “Closest to the Launch Pad”. Hayden Vaughn won “Highest Launch” and Jaxon McGavock won “Perfect Launch”. Anthony Heffernan won “Mass Destruction”. Then, we had a year-long point system competition, and Miley Broumley won this award. Her prize was a bluetooth Bose speaker, which comes with instructions for her to build and customize it herself. Another exciting attraction was from some of Tarleton’s engineering students. They brought and demonstrated a mechanical hand and their eight foot rocket. Then, the Rocket Team got to launch their insanely themed rockets. The Rocket Team had four very unique rockets that were all very different. The teams created Penelope the Flying Pig rocket, Glitter Bomb, Respect the Vets, and Juniper. Finally, the seniors that were is Science Club reunited and built trash rockets to test what they remember about rockets. It was amazing, and one of the trash rockets tried to attack Mr.Gentner! I am happy to report that overall each student’s rocket successfully launched and it was a great day. Mr.Gentner, Mrs. McAnally and the volunteers helped us have a great year, and I know I’ll never forget this year’s activities.

The Science Club Builds Rockets
Science Club President: Cason Tipper - The Hico Science Club met on Thursday, April 25th. We had more secret words than usual, and the word to shout was rocket. The words were lug, bridge, mass, Martinez, Leach, and headphones. It was family day. We thank all the parents who came and helped us. We also built rockets that we will launch at our May 17th Rocket Day! Overall, it was really fun and we had a great time!
The Science Club Presents to the School Board
Author: William Finch
For this month’s Hico Science Club meeting, we were given the opportunity to present all the incredible things we’ve done this year to the Hico school board. We had two secret words. They were “biosphere and liquid nitrogen”. The winners were Jason Finch (my dad) and Vicky Garrett. Mr. Finch won a multimeter and Mrs. Garrett won an extremely bright flashlight. We all had notecards and they showed us what to say. As we spoke, pictures were shown on a PowerPoint presentation. We hope the board enjoyed it as much as we did and look forward to the next meeting. We will build rockets and launch them on May 17th. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Science Club Turns Trash To Rockets
By Cason Tipper
The Hico Science Club met on Thursday March 21st, 2019. We did a “Trash to Rocket” competition. The rocket named “Lightly Salted” won with the highest altitude. We had three secret works that day. They were CG (center of gravity), Bose, and epic. If anybody on the rocket team or anyone in charge said these words, we had to yell out “Rocket!” Everyone had a lot of fun and we can’t wait until our next meeting on April 25th, 2019. It will be family day when we will be building our Estes rockets. We can bring in a family member to help us with the rocket assembly.

Tarleton State Visits Hico!
By: William Finch
At this month’s science club meeting, a physics director from Tarleton named Dr. Marble came. He had several stations for us to explore. Each station went over a different law of physics and at each area there was a student from Tarleton who talked us through the physics of the station. We had three “secret” words: oscillation, rotation, and smoke. If one of the words was said we would yell PHYSICS! The first and loudest person to say it won a flashlight. They were really bright! Some of the stations included: smoke cannon, hover board, electromagnetic metal ring launcher, holographic dome, liquid nitrogen pan, and a Van De Graaff machine that created lightning. At the end, Dr. Marbles took us outside and used a big soda bottle filled with liquid nitrogen to explode a trash can filled with plastic balls. We had an AMAZING time and look forward to the next meeting.

Science Club Battles with Robots!
By: Cason Tipper, President
The Hico Science Club met on Thursday, January 24th. Mr. Gentner taught us to program robots and then we raced them around a track. There were prizes for the fastest time around the track and fastest average time. The teams that won were “Joe Clones” and “Girl Power.” The prize was a 3D printed Einstein that had been spray painted. The secret words were input, multiplier, and “cough.” If someone said the secret word, we had to yell “Lego” and we would get an LED flashlight. Everyone had a lot of fun. The Hico Education Foundation funded new Lego Mindstorm robots for the science club. They are a great addition to the club and offer a great way to learn about programming.

Cole's Hardware Sponsors the Science Club!
By William Finch
This month’s science club meeting we discussed electricity. We did many tests and experimented with 9 volt batteries. We put several batteries together and tested how much electricity it produced. Mr. Gentner, the director, gave us all multimeters that were donated by Cole’s Hardware. We talked about how to test conductivity and the difference between the positive and negative side of the battery. During the meeting, we had keywords. Three of them were ohms, conductivity, and amp. When one of these words was said we all had to say “Tesla.” Whoever said it first or loudest won a prize. We all had a great time and look forward to our the next meeting.

We built biospheres!
Author: Cason Tipper, Science Club President
Hico Elementary Science Club met on Thursday, November 8. We made biospheres, which are mini ecosystems with sand, water, algae, two snails, and a ghost shrimp. We put algae, which has chlorophyll, which is needed for photosynthesis. The snail and shrimp are microorganisms, which means microscopic organism. The shrimp eats the algae and the algae makes oxygen. Thank you to Mrs. Poythress for making this day possible. To see a great video of our activities, visit HicoScience.com Our next meeting is December 20th. We will be learning about electricity with multimeters.

A secret handshake was exchanged!
Jeff Gentner was working at the concession stand during Hico's Friday night football game. As Weston approached the counter, Jeff said to Weston, "Yes sir. What can I get you?". Weston said, "I would like to do the secret Hico Science Club handshake." They both studied the YouTube instructional video with the handshake. Once they both felt confident, they performed the handshake to perfection. Points were gained. Congratulations Weston!
We elected officers!
Falyn McAnally:
Hey Hico Science Club fans! Falyn McAnally here to give everyone a quick catch up on what we have been doing. A few weeks ago during our last meeting we held elections for our new 5th grade club members, and decided on a schedule of activities. After all votes were cast and counted it was decided as follows(L-R): and Director of the Secret Handshake- Katie Gontarek, Director of Communications- Holland Thornton, VP- William Finch, President- Cason Tipper, Secretary- Anthony Heffernan. Congratulations to our new officers! We have a very exciting schedule of activities planned out for this year! At our next club meeting we will have the opportunity to make biospheres with Mrs. Poythress. See all you Smarty Pants there!

2018-2019 5th Grade Class - Recruiting Day!
Falyn McAnally: Hello everyone! Former VP of the Hico Science Club Falyn McAnally here! Last week, Mr. Gentner asked members of our club to come together to give a presentation about science club to this year’s new 5th graders. Friday morning, we all met at the elementary gym and got to tell the kids all the cool things they will get to experience if they decide to join science club. Each member did an awesome job sharing their excitement and love of our club! We hope that the 5th graders really enjoyed our presentation and they decide to become members this year. The first science club meeting will be September 27th.
